Learning From Marketing Mistakes: My Journey in Social Media Management
Most people see mistakes as a complete downfall, but I see them as an opportunity for growth. While at Visit Fresno County, I faced a few challenges that helped me grow in the marketing industry. Here is what you can try to avoid to keep yourself from making the same mistakes as me, but if you’ve already done these things, here’s how you can learn from them.

Misusing Channels: A Lesson in Content Creation
Firstly, I made the common mistake of reusing content across platforms. Content I designed for Instagram Reels was directly reposted to TikTok. This approach I used was a misstep, I failed to recognize the difference in audiences on each platform. While it may have been convenient for me to reuse old posts, I soon realized not every video works for every platform.
When I realized this, I changed my strategy to create content tailored to the audience of each platform. This meant I had to understand the details that make content successful on TikTok and Instagram. By investing more time in editing and tailoring the videos, I saw a big improvement in engagement and viewer response. That is why it’s important to get to know your audience on each platform.

Timing is Everything
Another mistake I’ve made lies with the timing of my posts. I’ve posted content based on my convenience rather than thinking more strategically. However, I saw that posting this way didn’t align with when our audience was actively online. By using analytics, I started to understand the peak times for user engagement and I began adjusting my posts based on that.
This change was not small; it caused our posts to boost engagement and performance. Analytics was a great tool to use to get a clear picture of what the audience’s habits were. This allowed us to reach more people and a lot were some we’d never reached before. These experiences at Visit Fresno County taught me that what may seem like small issues can make the biggest impact on content performance and engagement. Acknowledging and correcting these mistakes can enhance the marketing efforts you may be trying to make. In this industry where social media is constantly changing it’s important to study your audience and their habits to tailor the right content for them.
